1.1.1 GERMANY
1.2 Overview

The area defined as Germany and Austria DA1 covers the whole of the two countries. In 1997 the German fishing fleet comprised of 2,337 vessels.  The majority of the vessels (approx 1,800) are small coastal fishing boats under 12 metres in length which fish for demersal species and herring in the Baltic and North Sea.  The deep sea segment based in Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven and Rostock consists of 12 vessels and fishes in EU and international waters. The cutter segment  accounts for another 477 vessels and operates in the Baltic and North Sea,  a majority  (307) of the vessel  within the cutter segment are  beam trawlers fishing for flatfish and shrimps in the North Sea.

In 1997 the German fleet landed 90,000 tonnes valued at  80,432,502 ECU into German ports.  German landings into foreign ports amounted to 119,000 tonnes with a value of 79,414,370 ECU. The value of  German mussel production was 11,199,462 ECU.

Germany has a large fish processing industry with a total production output value of  1,272,666 ECU. The processing industry is relatively independent of the German and EU quota as it relies largely on imported raw materials, mainly from third countries.

1.3 Coastal Fishing Employment

The German fishing industry  provides employment for approximately 4,500 people.  The largest concentration of fishers  is in the Bundesland of  Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (which has a Baltic coastline) where 2,171 fishers are located.  The NUTS 3 areas of Ruegen and Ostvorpommkern (in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) have the highest number of fishers with 687 and 471 respectively.  Also on the Baltic coast is the NUTS 3 area of Osholstein in Schleswig-Holstein East Coast with 367 fishers.   On the North Sea coast,  Cuxhaven in Niderachsen  has the greatest number of  284 fishers.

The Baltic coastal ports account for 3,131 of the 4,422 persons employed in fishing  (70%).

1.4 Processing Employment

The employment pattern for processing differs depending on location.  The main processing centres are located on the North Sea coast line. Areas with high employment in processing include Bremerhaven with 3,346 persons employed, Cuxhaven with 2,005 persons employed and Hamburg  with 744 persons employed.   The North Sea centres account for almost 70% of the 11,280 processing persons employed in the whole of Germany.

Employment in the ancillary industries is estimated to total 633.  This figure was estimated from the cost structure of the German fleet.

Coastal  aquaculture  consists entirely of mussel production.  The main locations are (Nordfriesland) Bremerhaven and Harlesiel and Neuharlingersiel in Niesersachsen. Total employment in marine aquaculture amounts to 40 people.

1.7 Inland Aquaculture Employment

Inland aquaculture production in Germany is considerable.  Over 2,800 were employed in the production of trout and carp.  1129 of these persons employed were located in the Bayern region in the South East of Germany.  A further 408 persons were located in the Sachsen region.   These employment figures were estimated on the basis of value of production.

1.8 Inland Fishing Employment

Employment in inland fishing amounts to some 329 persons employed.  These persons employed were distributed evenly across the country with the highest number (93 people) being found in the Brandernburg region and 60 people in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region.

1.8.1 AUSTRIA
1.9 Overview

Austria does not have any coastline or fleet. There are no fish importers. There are no inland fisheries. There is inland aquaculture of trout and carp.

1.10 Inland Aquaculture Employment

The total production value of aquaculture was 12,282,350 ECU in 1997.  Fish farming in Austria concentrates on trout and carp production and provides employment for some 800 people of which 300 are employed full time.  There are a further 100 related processing persons employed. Carp production is mainly concentrated in the regions of Niederosterreich and Steiermark while trout production is mainly located in Steirermark, Karnten and Oberosterreich.   The employment distribution of the aquaculture sector was estimated on the basis of regional production at NUTS 2 level.  On this basis Oberosterreich (163 persons employed) and Steiermark (166 persons employed) were the most significant areas for employment.
