Spain E3 Mediterranean Socio-economic profile

Spain : E3

1.1 Overview

The area defined as Spain E3 includes the Spanish Mediterranean coastline, from Catalonia to Andalusia, the Balearics and from Ceuta to Melilla on the North African coastline.

In 1996 the Spanish Mediterranean fleet comprised of 4,959 vessels with a 563,207 kW and a GRT of 89,853.  65% of these vessels were less than 10 m in length.  In terms of vessel numbers the most important regional fleet was based in the Balearic Islands where there were 745 vessels.  In terms of tonnage the NUTS 3 region of Alicante and Almeria were the most important with 13,327 GRT and 12,528 GRT respectively.  The Catalonia, Valencian and Balearic fleets all operate exclusively within EU waters.   Almeria, Malaga and Ceuta all have a proportion of vessels that operate in non EU waters, mostly in Morrocan waters

In 1996 landings of fish by the Andalusian and Mediterranean fleet totalled 27,566 tonnes [C1]valued at 56,640,966 ECU. In the Andalusian provinces and in Murcia and Ceuta significant landings were of mackerel, horse mackerel and sardine.  Further up the coastline and in the Balearics, landings of red mullet assumed more importance.

The fish processing sector is based mainly around a few companies where most of the production is concentrated although some small processing companies do exist.

The distribution of fishers along the coastline is fairly even,  the largest number is found in Alicante with 2,356.  The smallest numbers are in Ceuta (168) and Melilla ( 35) on the North African coast.   The consultants considered that the presence of female labour was insignificant in fishing and naval repairs.

There are significant numbers of part time fishers recorded in the Andalusian regions of Almeria, Granada and Malaga,  44% of fishers are part time.
